Reupholstered Vintage Chair Obsession

When I see people searching for the perfect accent, dining, or desk chair at stores my heart drops. Only if they knew the secret. The secret that would save them hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars. A secret so easy and so simple. And because I have had a great week I am in the mood in telling you all that secret.

Lets be honest, furniture is not made the way it use to be. Nothing wrong with having your whole house "made in china" but we must admit that those English accent chairs or any handmade antique chair that was made with time, care and love will out-last any chair we buy today.

Well, I bet you are asking, "antique chairs are not cheap, right?" or "where will I find them?" or even "okay, fine, but they are old and fugly looking."

So, where do you find them? NOT at an antique store!!! I find them at Estate sales, flea markets, garage sales and yes, on the curbside-which means FREE! Don't go saying "yucko." Until you see the pictures below of some chairs that were re-done for clients and were free. hehe.

Okay, you have your great, solid wood, vintage or antique chair but you don't like how it looks. This is the best part. You get to bring out your whimsical self. Have fun with colors and patterns. Martha Stewart Labels Gone Wild

So I did it. I ran to staples only to find 80% of the the Martha Stewart collection sold out. First, no problem, cause I only wanted the labels. Second, no worries, cause all the labels were still in stock. However, I truly hope the Martha Stewart line is not just a Staples Fad but something that will stay. I have been in business for a few years and I hate when my favorite file folders or labels are no longer "sold." I like consistency in my office look. So stick around, no pun intended.

Here is a look at how I went label happy in the middle of the early morning. Night. whatever it was. I apologize for the blurred pictures at the bottom. Realized they were the addresses of my current clients who have not gone "public and/or MLS." But, aren't they cute anyway?

How to create a quick Laundry Room Makeover

The next room to tackle in my home endevors was the laundry room. Let's face it. Who likes doing laundry? or spending time in "that" room? So, I wanted to make it place I enjoyed being in and not just for laundry, but for gift wrapping and sewing me some pillows.

Here is the before shots: A hodge-podge of cleaning supplies, hangers and stuff.

The first step to a makeover is always color. I re-painted the laundry room (okay, so my Israel re-painted the laundry room -- every needs their second husband -- remember that blog?) Anyhoo, paint will always change a look and feel of any room. I didn't want to spend more money so I simply used left over paint from our kitchen makeover. Then found some great baskets at Target for only $2.50 and the rest I had in the home. Check out the after shots.

The New Martha Stewart Collection at Staples

Just a quick looksy at this great new collection at Staples. A great way to get and stay organized. There a lot of items I liked in this new collection but I am pretty satisfied with my binder and filing system. I wasn't going to go running to Staples just yet. UNTIL I found the labels. I love them all and will go running. What is great about some of these labels is they can be permanent as well. For instance, I can label my baskets in the linen closet or pantry. Quick, great and easy. Check them out. You can find them at a Staples near you.

Laundry Room Re-model

Okay, many of us are not fans of doing laundry. If it happened once a week, maybe I would look forward to it. But, as many of you might know, in a household with kids, laundry could easily be done everyday. For the last few years my laundry room has not changed or inspired me to fold more neatly. There was nothing inspirational about it. I had tried to add a craft rack and a mirror but it needed a new look. A look to inspire me to want to stay in there folding, ironing, crafting, or sewing. The room is currently under works but I thought I share a few great finds for the space.

There is nothing like an Elfa shelf to store all your cleaning supplies, detergents, tools etc. But, I always had it simply out and visible to the world. Check out the before.

ummm. yeah, that was the before. YUCKO!!! I have a ton of old rags to clean the home that always would overflow, tools everywhere and cleaning supplies that I do not and have not used in years. Cause they are yucky toxic but I feel bad throwing them down the drain or trash.

Well, I finally got to organizing and throwing things away. Now, the only things that were put back were things that I truly want to keep, use and have.

Tah-dah. Target to the rescue. I had to go to Target to buy a birthday present last week when I happened to walk-by the $1 section. NOT!!! I always stop by this section before continuing my entrance into the store. And guess what I found.

That is right. For $2.50 I found different colored totes. Score. I grabbed 6 in 2 different colors. Colors I knew matched my new Ironing board cover bought the week prior on sale.

Here is a sneak peak at the newly organized shelf but I can't show you the rest till later in the week.

Kitchen Chore Chart

So, this morning I had a breakdown. Every day I wake up I have 1,001 things to do in order for us to get out of the door. Example...

Come downstairs to...

Check work email, check work texts, check work voice mails

Unload dishwasher

Re-stock dishwasher-amazingly, with things that piled in the sink while I was sleeping

Make 2 different breakfast(s) one kid loves oatmeal, one hates everything

Wipe down kitchen

Make 2 kids lunches

Double check kids backpacks

Make 3 beds

Pick out 3 outfits (2 kids and myself)

Shower and prep myself

Dress the boys

Dress myself

Check email/text/voice mails (yes, new messages have arrived in the last 45minutes)

Double check laundry so we have some clean clothes for the next couple days

Get kids teeth washed

Get kids jacket and shoes on (this takes longer then my SHOWER!!!)

Push them out the door

Grab stuff for work and get out the door myself--somehow.

Well, basically, in 6 years I have NEVER woken up, gotten ready for my day, and simply left the house. Like any mom, it takes 2 hours to get 3 human beings out the door so we can simply get out the door.

I have 2 great boys that have not needed a Star chart or a Discipline chart (knocking on wood right now). Of course, we have our moments, but I think my husband and I have done a good job of convincing them we can go crazy if they do not listen.

However, I realized this morning, my boys need to help out to get us out the door in the morning. Simple things like getting themselves dressed, making their beds and brushing their teeth. So yes, off to Target I went. On my way, I stopped at 3, yes 3 stores (including the Container Store) looking for a Chore Chart I would like. And no, I do not do DIY chore charts.

Leave it up to Target to have a chore chart I loved. Made by The Board Dudes (www.boarddudesdirect.com). However, after staring at one of the boards at the store I did not like how multiple kids were on 1 chart. Since my boys are young, color coded small stars were not enough, they needed large visuals. for $8.99 I grabbed 2. Score!!

Also, EVERY SINGLE MORNING my oldest asks me, "do I have gym today?" "do I have Spanish today?" "do I have Lego's today?" etc etc etc. My husband and I have a smart phone calendar we can access via email, computer, and phone. Sadly, our kids will not be getting a smart phone any time soon so they need a visual. Also, made by Board Dudes was a calendar I liked better than any other calendar I found this morning. And this is simply for my 6 and 3 year old. When they ask what they have? I will simply just point while I am unloading the dishes.

Anyhoo, here are today's Before and After pictures. I used this cabinet wall space to display pictures and kids art. He,he, he, not anymore.....

Since this is not a discipline chart the tasks include. Brush my teeth in the morning. Make my bed.... Goal: Alleviate mommy's morning To-Do List.

How to Create A Functional and Inspiring Home Office

I recently did a post about having a home office. As a property stylist I do about 50% of my work out of the office-at clients homes. However, I can easily spend over 50% of my time at my office putting floor plans together, color boards, style boards or creating an action plan report for my Staging clients. It took me awhile to create an office I enjoy. I began upstairs. I had an office space upstairs, but then, I felt like it was too close to our bed. It was too easy to walk up with anxiety about work or stay up late working. I know any Feng Shui expert would have agreed. So, the office left the upstairs and headed into the basement. We have a fully finished basement with a guest room. My husband practically lives in this man cave. I asked his permission to join him and create an office space for me. He couldn't really disagree. I even went out and bought a new corner desk that would work for both of us. And then it happened. After a few months, I felt lost in the man cave. Wondering if there was a world up above.There was no natural sunlight and the sound of the washing machine in the next room was my constant reminder that I was in the basement. YUCK!

So, on to another option. Our home has 2 very well sized rooms that are not really in use. They could be my office, but I tried them and didn't like it. What to do? I stared and stared at our living room. Not quite a big living room I might add, but, if this became my office I would stare out of a beautiful arched window all day, natural light coming in from all sides, and I would be in the nucleus of the home. That is when I created the new HSCC Headquarters. I love it!

Of course you know me by now that I did it Thrifty Keki style. I knew I wanted a multifunctional sofa console. I wanted to be able to use the console for an office desk but when we have parties it would convert into a Wine/Drink Bar. I wanted something that also had storage for my files. Thus, I knew a console wasn't the best option, but it still needed to be no higher than 30 inches. Average sofa height. Well, I always wanted a Bankers Desk. You know, those solid wood desks made back in the day. I was finding them too large or too expensive. Antique dealers try to sell them for $400 or more. CRAZY!! I know. Finally, after checking craigslist EVERY FREAKN' Day I saw a post from a SAHM/MOMtrepreneur who was selling her Bankers Desk. She was a photographer and needed a larger table instead of a desk. Her new table had arrived in the home and her desk needed to be gone yesterday. She was selling it for $60!!! Now, this Bankers desk was in pristine condition, had the original glass cover top to protect the wood. 9 drawers and craftsman's detail on the back so if you did not want to put it up against a wall or sofa it was appealing to the eye. I called her and there was already another offer on the table to pick it up in a couple days. I knew I had a gem and I wasn't going to let it go. I offered her $100 and same day pick-up. Well, we know who one that battle

Now, the desk is in it's original wood stain which is perfect...for now. I do stare at it daily and contemplate sanding it, priming it, and painting it an antique white. Living in Chicago, this will not happen until the Spring or Summer since I will not do the work in my home but outside. So I still have a few months to think it over.

In the mean time, it is precious. I was able to organize the drawers exactly for my business needs. Files, marketing drawer, blog drawer, art (marker/pencil) drawer for floor planning, etc. Also, I wanted to add 2 lamps on top. To give the room a pop of color and light without having to use the overhead lights. I couldn't find anything I liked. So I found 2 lamp stands at Target for $8.99 (on sale of course) and 2 plain white shades $2.99 (on sale of course). I covered them with leftover fabric I had in the house. A blog about this is coming. Anyhoo, Tah-dah, my desk view.

Now, we all know that a office is more than a desk. Book shelves and storage is a must. Luckily a year prior we had great carpenters come in and make a custom built-in shelving unit in our living room. I took over 1/4 of the shelving for my design books, catalogs, etc. I am a binder-filing-type-of- girl. I keep all my past clients files in a binder by year and my current clients stay in my desk filing system. See below.

Sitting at my desk, directly to my left are all my binders of current topics and clients. Then looking to my right is a gorgeous furniture piece given to me by my Aunt Mary and Uncle Pancho. My Aunt Mary's grandfather made it himself in Ireland and brought it over with him on the boat oh so many years ago. It is flawless and an example of perfection. Behind a door I store items like extra paper, supplies, cameras, the things that I do not want to have out causing an eye sore, literally.

My husband can complain that I am always at my desk. Well, I love my home office aka HSCC headquarters. I work here during the day (and night) and I can see a beautiful arch window with views to the local neighbor passerby. My mailman waves to me everyday as he passes the front window knowing I am at work. Everything has it's place, it's purpose and keeps me motivated. But there is nothing like placing the wine and glasses for a party and driving the forces out of the kitchen and into that Formal Living room you never otherwise use. Before having the desk/console here in the living room we only used the space as a means to get to another part of the house. Now, this living room is always in use and has finally brought my party guest into our new found space. For instance, during our tree trimming party.

Where ever you decide to create a home office make sure it make me feel happy and motivated. Hey, it took me 3 tries before finding my happy place.

Superbowl Sunday D.I.Y

Powder Room Quick Re-model or Shall I Say Re-style

Well, I couldn't wait any longer. I had to share the powder room re-style so far. Now, I am missing the unique accessories that will make it pop, towel holder, soap dispenser etc. But here is the current Before and After pictures.

BEFORE: Traditional Wall Paper, Creme Trim

THE AFTER: Transitional. Read below for the details

The paint color is Valley Mist by Benjamin Moore. It is a play on gray and green. All the trim was painted white. I picked this mirror because I really wanted a Sunburst White mirror. Then I found this. It is made from ALL Re-claimed wood and the mirror is easily removable. It is painted gray, white, natural brown, black and accented with 3 spindles painted Chartreuse Green which is in my kitchen (right around the corner). So I grabbed it! perfect! BUT, when I get bored of this color scheme I can easily, sand, prime and paint it a bright white. Which might happen sooner rather than later. Below is an up close picture of the mirror.

Home Office

When the economy decided to change, business' changed. I recently read that there has been an incremental increase in the the number of Home Based Business.' Now, that includes everything from consultants, repairman, lawyers, realtors, analists, bloggers, designers, accountants and more. And yes, I fall into that category. When I am with a client, or simply working, I do refer to my office. For instance, "I am not at my office right now, but I can send it to you once I get in" or "I am heading back to my office now, I will get all the paperwork to you asap" or simply "call my office." :)

Well, as a Staging stylist I work 99.9% in other people's home but we all need that space to re-create or draw up a new contract, and sadly, that space is called "the office."

So, why not make the Home Based Office something AMAZE-balls. I am going to reveal the HSCC (Home Staging By CC) office but, thought I begin with some inspiration for us all. Enjoy!!

Target's $1.00 Section

Had to share this quick find. At Target they have this $1.00 Sectional by the entrance. It changes every few weeks the inventory but I do stop there looking for quick and money saving Home Finds. Many times I walk away with nothing. But this week, GREAT FIND. For $2.00 I grabbed these 2 wire mesh baskets for my pantry. Exactly what I have been looking for. The perfect size, and fit. Breathable for the veggies. I placed a clean paper folded paper towel at the bottom and tah-dah.

OH, and I found this cute baskets that go with my kitchen color scheme to store my kids instant oatmeal packages and school snacks. I found these in the clearance aisle. I knew I wouldn't spend $6.99 on them (which was there price a couple weeks ago when I first saw them but didn't grab it--too high a price for my thrifty ways). Well, I found them in clearance marked at 50% off. Patience is key in waiting for deals. I go to the cashier and she says, "these are not in clearance." I reply with a smile, "oh, they were marked as such, kind of misleading don't you think?" She calls the manager and he sells them at sale price cause there were marked -- even if it was wrong. SCORE!!! Thank you Target!

Kitchen Makeover

As you may have remembered, 3 weeks ago we got a leak from the upstairs bathroom into our kitchen. Click here for that blog. At first, I saw it as a headache and money going in the drain (literally). But then, I decided to turn this headache into my kitchen and 2 bathroom makeover. We ended up re-styling the downstairs bath as well. But, before I get ahead of myself, here is the kitchen re-style.

The before was beige/yellow walls and not very transitional. I wanted the kitchen to reflect our family better.

Before

The during was fun looking for new vibrant gray colors with green and blue accents. Vibrant and transitional.

The after is just who we are. We like to host friends and family a lot. I wanted something that they felt comfortable, young and fun, yet not too crazy.

The color schemes go with our living, dining and entryway. NOT our T.V. room/family because I am doing that room next. Anyhoo, the walls are Wedgewood Gray by Benjamin Moore. Not a huge discount on this just the usual 20% decorators discount but was worth it. Then, I got fabric's for the pillows, Groovy Grill and Solar Flair, online for 75% off, $6.00/yd SCORE!! Made pillows and re-upholstered the bench with Oceanside Admiral. Nothing like a good staple gun.

Top Gray Paint Colors

The Gray's are the new neautrals for the next decade, at least. Beige's are still big hits with homeowners; however, we will begin to see that Gray's will slowly replace our neutral beige palettes. I love how Gray's can work well with all accent colors, white, greens, blues, yellows...it is a perfect neutral palette.
As you may have remembered, we were forced to begin a few re-styling projects earlier than expected. With that, came new paint colors to explore in my own home. I say that because these are colors I have been using in Clients homes for the past year. Living vicariously through them. But, I was forced to find the time to head to the paint store for me and begin a new color palette in my own home. Here are my ultimate favorite hues of Gray.

Kitchen Face-lift

Remember 2 weeks back we had a bathroom leak into our lower lever (kitchen).
After some initial bad moments I realized, hold up!! This is the perfect opportunity re-style our Linen Closet, Kitchen, and First Floor Powder Room!!! So, when Life gives you lemons, you re-style your home.

Checked off the list is our upstairs linen closet, I wanted something bright and cheerful. Linen closets tend to be so bland and boring. Why not pep it up with a color shocker. Now, every time I open my linen closet I don't smile, I laugh.

Now, that is over we have moved into the kitchen. This is our current state.

Color Scheme is already picked. Can you guess which one I picked. Well, I will show you. I decided to give myself my own Mood Board. I create these for all my clients yet never have the time to do one for my own room re-designs. So here is the hopeful turnout via moodboard. Actual space is not completed so stay tuned.

Re-furbish Vintiques

As you may have already guessed, I am hooked on vintage/antiques. Or as I like say "vintiques." Not your grandmothers antiques. Well, technically they were but we give new a new life. A recently shared a secret Etsy shop I love for pillow inspiration. This is one of my favorite Vintage Furniture re-designers on Etsy. The shop is Minthome and the best part, they are out of Chicago. Easy and quick for me and customers. Also enjoy the colors. Gives me hope that others are into colors as much as I am. How to Create a Message Board with Chalk Paint

If you haven't figured it out yet, I LOVE chalk paint. I use it for wine glasses (click here to see how) and I use it on old vintage wood trays. I had this wood tray laying on my ottoman but I never really used it. I thought there had to be a way to get more use out of this large tray? Chalk paint was the answer. I painted the border of the tray with a color scheme in my kitchen. Then I painted the inside of the tray with chalk paint. I nailed on the back Picture Wire and tah-dah. An instant message board. When I host events I write the menu and oven temperature reminders etc. Or important dates for the month/week that we cannot forget about or simply quick notes to the kids like-- Merry Christmas or Happy Birthday! Re-Styling Your Home Office

I have a client with a beautiful existing Home Office. They designed a built in shelving unit with 2 custom desks. And then...not much else-which is good for me. They called me to come in and give it a "face-lift, to give it life and color color color." I begin all new re-designs with a floor plan for my clients. Once we agree on a floor plan the fun is just beginning. Here are the before pictures of the space.

As you can see, the built-in's are great but missing some pazzazz. An easy fix with organizational accessories and color. They have also been using an old kitchen chair with slipcovers as desk chairs. One wall is still empty because they just couldn't decide what to put up on the space. There was also just a big open floor area since there were NO other furnishings. Here is a hopeful floor plan designed for this space.

Since it is a perfectly square room, we added colorful ROUND rug to break up all the straight lines. We are also looking for that perfect side lounge chair. Maybe with or without a foot ottoman. That is still up in the air. I always always add a lounge chair in a Home Office. Why? Because, well, I don't want to sit at my desk all day!! Sometimes you just feel like curling up in a comfy chair with your laptop to send out those contracts. Or tweet.

The homeowner also requested a shelving unit for extra storage area on the far wall. To packages to return, or larger items. Above this I placed an existing piece that is in their kitchen.

HSCC's Mission: Which we chose to accept, was to find new desk chairs and create a look, a feel, with a purposeful space. Here is our moodboard to guide our client in the shopping process. (Some clients chose me to do the shopping for them, or request Styleboards and they complete the shopping-A great budget friendly design option). Anyhoo, the chair would be re-upholstered to give the space a color scheme. Industrial side table with color tins for storage, glass colored lamps and an the existng wall unit taken from the kitchen.

UPDATE: client purchased a rug so now we have updated our style board. She also requested to possibly make the office side chair a recliner. Done!

Dining Room Chandelier's

I have a new client looking to re-vamp her dining room. I truly feel the dining room is losing it's purpose in the modern home. To bring families together to sit and enjoy the love of food prepared with time and care. To sit and converse for hours in a setting that gives you calm and belonging. I always make sure every home we live in has a meaningful dining room. Whether it be formal or laid back, with benches or king chairs, there is nothing like a chandelier to tie it all together.

Goodbye Granite and Cookie Cutter Cabinets

Last year, I had a re-design client asking my opinions on which direction she should go in with her new kitchen. Like many, she was heading in the direction of Granite counter tops, Wood stained cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. I pushed her to go away from this. A style that has been around for over a decade. Now, I also have this kitchen done by the previous owners around 2000-2001. So I guess you you could say they were head of the times or spot on.

But, ask my husband, I would love to bring color and head into the new Kitchen styles. I have been collecting ideas and have had the great opportunity to live vicariously through a client. Here are pictures provided by Traditional Home magazine to help move you into 2012 with new ideas for your kitchen. Notice the wood cabinets and their color choices. We currently have Great Shaker Style cabinets but would totally go with the color in picture #3. Be creative, be unique and don't forget, you don't need to run out and purchase all new cabinets....Re-purpose, Re-use, Re-decor!!!

Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012

Like everyone else out there today, well, except those in Somoa who had no Friday 12/30/11. I compiled my New Years past and future goals. 2011, though it decided to surprise me with a few quirks in its last week, was a good year. My Home Staging business had it's best year yet! I was busy growing the company this year and it was worth every sleepless minute. I look back to exactly a year ago tonight (thanks to my momagenda) and can smile. Wow, how HSCC (Home Staging By C.C.) has had a growth spurt! There were a couple great business moments that I look forward in sharing when the time is right. Consequently, it was only a matter of time that I was ready to explode with ideas that needed to be shared. I started a blog in 2009. This blog was mostly about marketing my Staged properties. However, every once in awhile I would venture into a personal blog about a chair I re-designed for a client or me! Everything changed in August when I was approached by a sponsor to create a new kind of blog. I had to leave my last blog site behind and enter the world of blogger. And there has been no looking back. Consequently, great opportunities have arrived. Thank you!Personally, 2011 was the year of not being able to Just Say No. Before Stager, before blogger, I am a mom of two amazing little boys. And I cannot say no to them! I am on my sons preschool board as Special Events chair and Room Mom for my other son. I also make sure that I take care of 2 days of carpool because, who knew you could learn so much from your kids by filling up your van with all their friends for 10 minutes a day. But, you reach a point, or your body is literally telling you, to stop and slow down. That brings me into 2012! Now, if you know me at all, I most likely will not be slowing down. It just isn't my style, but I need to get organized in 2012 with lists. With many lists. And, of course I have spent the last few days of 2011 getting ready for this great new year that is coming. The other man in my life

Every housewife needs two great men in their lives. Their husband and their contractor. I love my husband to pieces but he isn't exactly Bob Vila. In the last five years, I have had many contractors and/or Mr. Do it All's step into my humbled abowed and help me with different parts of my home. Some I never want to see again because they were simply thieves. Some were great but we just had a 1 time project affair. And with some it was just not meant to be. However, I always had my eyes and ears open waiting to meet the contractor that would help me carry out my visions. And like anything in life, timing is everything. I am finally at a point in my home where change is beginning to happen (more on why is coming soon). As you may already know we had a major bathroom leak on Christmas. A bathroom that has given us many headaches. A bathroom we didn't want to put too much $$$ in cause we knew it was a remodel waiting to happen. Well, Christmas happened and we needed help. Our shower valve is a F. Grohe. a.k.a top of the line headache. I had 3 different contractors and/or plumbers come out and it was very obvious no one wanted to play around with Grohe. One guy even had the cajones to say he can rip it all out (throw it away) and I can run to lowes and get a whole new system for less than $100. Ummmmmm, well, the reason to have a top of the line is because it is suppose to last a freakin house lifetime! 20-30 years like products use to! Yes, I am yelling. Needless to say, he was one of those contractors I won't see again. Finally, I call Advantage. A plumbing supply store where my Father in law has made enough purchases. They gave me my new BFF! He came out and is everything an old-school, real contractor should be. A freakin SURGEON. Yes, a Surgeon. E sits there with all his tools and tears into my Grohe. I see it in 100 little pieces but he sees the problem. After diagnosing it, he calls his contacts to find me the new part free of charge. He also taught me everything else that was wrong with the installation and fixed what he could as we spoke. Now, of course this crazy replacement piece won't arrive until Monday but in the mean time my Honey Do List is growing as we speak. And by honey, I mean my Contractor.

When life gives you lemons..

Lately the timing of many mishaps has been nothing but perfect. It was as if the universe could read my mind. Example, "really, what else can go wrong?" and then something did. Or another example, "seriously, my luck sucks right now, just bring it on." and the universe did. It is the same when you are driving somewhere and you are late and your mind says, "I bet I get every red light." And you DO!!!

Well, not anymore. Power of mind!! Power of making something good out of something that frankly just sucks.

If you read my latest Reality Check Blog you would know that the last week was kind of a P.I.T.A. And to top it all off, my linen closet is a war zone since the plumbing for the tub is in the back wall of the closet. I have been staring at this linen closet for 3 days and I decided to give it a fresh, new, fun, whimsical change. YEAHHH! a re-design closet project. Well, here is a picture of the war zone before. It is currently still in the works so stay tuned...

The time as arrived. As you may have remembered, we had some major plumbing bathroom plumbing issues over the holiday. Which included linking below into our Kitchen. Well, instead of getting upset (okay, that is a lie, I was upset) but I decided that this was a great excuse to do some re-design makeovers. Makeover #1, the upstairs linen closet. Makeover #2, re-styling/re-painting our kitchen. Kitchen project blog coming soon. We have finally finished the plumbing work. Of course it was a bigger hoopla than expected but all new cooper pipes, shower vales, shower faucets and even new shower in the other bathroom we have finally completed our Linen Closet Makeover. This linen closet was dark and gloomy even being white. I covered all the shelving with bright white contact paper, painting the walls a bright (almost glow in the dark green) and added some new organzing baskets. Total cost $27.83 YEAH!! I have a client who is looking to add something to an empty wall. The space between the L-Shape Sectional and the wall is massive. So she has options. Their great room is GREAT! Mommy tends to be right on the other side, in the kitchen, or in the lounge area. However, there were a few "must-haves." They needed some storage for a few toys that tend to make there way into the corner, a place to hang art, and COLOR. I was basically asked to come in and add color to the space since the larger furniture pieces have already been purchased. Done deal. This is the current space.

I suggested a console table that will serve multiple functions. Such as, a homework station while mom is in the kitchen with a whimsical, colorful table lamp to add color. When entertaining guest, the table converts into a wine bar, to place the glasses and bottles of wine over in this corner and it will force your guest out of the kitchen into a new space in the home. Then, a double or single storage ottoman underneath to quickly hide toys or kids books. I have been playing around with so many ideas but here are my top choices so far. Final decisions will depend on what color scheme they pick at our next consult. But what do you think so far?

Every year we buy that we buy our Christmas tree, I look forward to the many uses I can get from that 1 beautiful tree. One item I collect is the Tree Stumps that get cut off at the check-out. The staff always cuts the bottom of every tree that leaves the lot. This is to make sure it will balance and absorb fresh water easily. I head behind the counter and peak at the floor to see many sad tree stumps that were left behind. I always ask if I can take some with me, and they are happy to have me help clean up their floor. With these stumps you can have quick Wine Coasters for your Holiday Table's or a quick and easy Name Card Place settings, which I did years ago. They last forever and when the holidays are over, you can reuse them or tie them together in sets of 4 with a beautiful Holiday Red Bow and hand them out as party favors for your guests!!

Christmas Eve is just around the corner. I dropped the kids off at school and came running home to begin (and complete) the name place settings for our Christmas Eve dinner. Saw this idea on Pinterest (ornaments) and tweaked it (Meg Caswell's Paint Fan Deck idea from an episode of Great Rooms) to make it my own version of both ideas.

Projects includes:

1. Green Ornaments from Big Lots -- $3 for 12

2.Sherwin Williams Color Deck Cards -- Free since I have a few old deck cards

3.Avery business card paper -- Free since I always buy this when I find it on sale. great craft project paper to have around the house

4.Swirly scissors, regular scissors, glue and permanent marker.

Tree Trimming Party

Tree Trimming Parties are the equivalent of a Painting Party. Have friends and family over to help you paint a room and then supply them with food and drinks. Every holiday we kick off the season with our Annual Tree Trimming Party. Everyone helps decorate the tree and I make sure to give them enough to eat and drink. But, more importantly, it has become a fun and memorable tradition.

My mom, the great memory keeper she is, saved almost every memorable or hand-made ornament while growing up. When I got married, she handed me a box with my half of the ornaments. Years later, when my brother got married, she handed him a box full of his ornaments. This inspired me to begin the Memory Christmas Tree. Every year we place on the tree those ornaments I grew up with; and then we have been adding new ones that represent what happened that year. For instance, the handyman ladder for when we bought our current home. Or the little fireman for the year my son was obsessed with them (with a permanent marker I write the year on the ornament in case there is not one already).

As you can imagine, every year we open the great big box of ornaments and remember each event as we placed them on the tree. SO, if you come over during the holidays, stop by the Memory Tree to see what we have been up to the past year.

Living Room Re-do

So, I am finally beginning the process of re-doing and sharing my own at-home transformations. The funny thing is, just when I think I am done, I move or re-do a small corner of the room or space, it is always a work in progress, so always stay tuned.

We bought our third home in 2006 when we had just one little eleven month-old munchkin crawling around. I drove by the home at least 3 times not wanting to come in. From the outside it looked unwanted, lonely and sad. Turns out, it was a vacant home (Home Stagers out there know that this is the worst). It is so bad to keep the home vacant that I--Home Stager-fell into the trap of not even wanting to see the house. Luckily, one day, our realtor said, "JUST GO IN!"

And I did. Within 10 seconds I fell in love with the home. I could see it's potential and character. Arch Doorways, original detail with upgraded features and most importantly--a finished basement. In our area of North Chicago, to get a finished basement is a dream come true.

So, of course, as the story goes-we moved. Looking back at our photos on moving day I am at awe to see we had no furniture-I thought we had somewhere to sit.
Four years later, I have completed 2 rooms (ONLY). Now the fun begins with new budgets, blogging, and the adventure of creating a dream home.

LIVING ROOM BEFORE

Our living room on move-in day had chocolate dark walls with off-white/beige trim/molding. It is hard to see, but our home is under EVERY SINGLE large tree on the block. Can you hear the frustration in my voice? lol. We just did our 100th Fall leaf clean-up of our yard and my husband and I are laughing because we don't even own a single tree; yet, it cost us mula to keep our gutters clean and leaves tidy. Anyhoo, I degress.

So, to have our many windows shaded with trees, I knew I wanted a lighter color on the walls. Almost immediately I took to the paint brush and re-painted the living room. 4 years later, I am ready to try a new color of grey but I thought I sit and enjoy the space while I take on the next room. Here is the after.

What I did and Where It is From:

First and foremost, I repainted all the walls Benjamin Moore Sandy Brown with Crisp Khaki. Yes, I mix colors for the one of a kind look. The trim is an oil-based (I know I know, won't be doing that again) Benjamin Moore Trim White. I also wanted to keep the original fireplace because there is beautiful stone detail, but sadly, previous homeowner's have added layers of paint. I learned that using a flat white paint will allow the details to show better since it won't have a glare.

Then, we had no shelves for art, frames, books in the entire house. So I had built-in's made with beadboard and details to play off the fireplace. Trying to make it look like it was always meant to be there.

If you have read my other blogs, you know that I am a Thrifty Keki Re-designer. I spend my days with clients re-doing entire rooms on the tightest of budgets. Here is our living room budget

Furniture:

-Coffee Table is Pottery Barn $400 (price tag underneath). I bought it for $25 at a Moving Sale. Used some good old Restore-A-Finish

-White Chairs: Ikea of course!

-Grey Loveseat: Brand New from a local family who purchased it for their space and it was too small. Lucky me!!!

-Round Table with Glass Top in front of window: Was my table growing up in my room with Ethan Allan Fabrics. I am not your Ethan Allan girl anymore so I found this fabric for almost 80% off and spent a morning making a new 90 inch ROUND Table Cloth. AMAZING how much fabric is needed for this project. Took about 5 yards to make but my total cost $27.00 (with the 80% off)

-Books: I believe "What is on Your Coffee Table" says something about the home. I am always on the hunt for First Edition Hard Cover book that means something to us. Whether it is a First Edition Rockwell or a Joan Miro. Rummage sales are my favorite place. I have found, in perfect condition, First Editions with autographs! Go hunt! you will love it.

Most people spring clean areas of the home in the Spring. Logical. I do as well. However, during the days after Thanksgiving, when we prep our home for the holidays, I have always done a kitchen Winter Cleaning, or as I like to say, "Mission Kitchen Organize."

Like many out there, I host 3-5 different Holiday gatherings in my home. That calls for a lot of Kitchen time. So, I spend a little time the day after Thanksgiving, cleaning out my drawers and cabinets.

Why??

Can you only imagine...I am running wild in the kitchen before a Holiday Party and I can't find my paring knife, or measuring spoon, or that one special wooden spoon from Chile that is perfect for stirring EVERYTHING.

Trust me, once you re-organize these areas (before the holiday frenzy), you feel like 100 pounds have been lifted off your shoulders as you enter your domain in the kitchen. Mission Accomplished.

Holiday DIY

Tis the season. I am very excited for this years Holiday Decorating. I am changing out a few things to give this holiday season a little bit more of a green (literally) brighter feel instead of the "country" feel. Here is a little peak at what is too come.


Hints of tools, spray paint, ribbons, Oh my! Notice my vintage Craft Holder. Found it in Michigan and fell in love. It holds my staple gun, hot glue gun etc, you know, those tool I need around the house or when I am staging.

Holiday Card Holder

UPDATE--Holiday Card Holder GONE MAD!

Every year I debate where to put my Holiday Cards. They begin on the Fireplace mantel, head over to the shelves, piano, and before the big day arrives, 99% of cards get put away. Who has room for 50+ cards.

So, I know that they sell Holiday Card Holders but I never saw one that I liked. I remember the one my mom had, which is awesome- a vintage, acrylic tree shaped holder the size of your front door.

Recently, I found a DIY version that I decided to do. It had ribbon glued to the back of a Holiday Sign. So I took that as my inspiration.

This wasn't costly so in case I don't like it, I don't feel bad about not using it again next year. What you need:-strong ribbon: any style will do. I went with the color scheme of this years holiday theme in my house-clothing pins -spray paint: I picked silver for the pins and red for the wreath.

While at the Dollar Store picking up clothing pins I picked up a NOEL sign for, that's right, $1.

Cost for Project:
Paint: $0 (used spray paint I already had)

Wreath: $0 (had this in the garage)

SO! that is why, and for SO MANY other reasons, I want my kids to have garlic daily. Now, what kid or adult do you know that will eat a clove a day?? So, to make cooking with Garlic easier I copied my Grandma's idea. Throw A LOT of garlic in the blender with First Cold Pressed Olive Oil. I know, I am also picky with my Olive Oil. It must be First Cold Pressed.


Add Garlic and Olive Oil to create a paste-like texture

AND there you have it. Store all the yummy garlic ready for cooking. I throw it in homemade soup, scrambled eggs (yes eggs), stews, spread it on top of meat, pork, chicken, I put it in all my rice, cous cous, noodles, quinoa, tomato sauces..... the list is endless.

Re-styling a Little Girls Chair

This was simple job. The hardest part was finding the piece. We are re-styling a little girls room on a budget but I don't always like to go All Home Goods on a room. There are many great deals out there and it just takes some patience to find them. I searched our local ads, craigslist, and more for a solid white wood girls desk. Finally, it came up. I sent the link to my clients and within 24 hours they went to pick-it up. Score.

I picked up the chair to re-style it for them but since the white finish on the wood was in new condition, no painting was needed. Just the seat cover.

Fresh Home Summer 2011 Edition

Fun great vibrant color ideas that you can bring into your home. It really inspired me this summer. My husband is a witness to all the new colors I have added to our outside. New umbrella, new cushions and pillows. Reclaimed wood that was re-purposed as my herb/flower shelving etc etc. And you know me, nothing was retail pricing, everything was a bargain or re-done by thrifty keki. Next blog entry is about my summer patio/yard finale projects so stay tuned.

The POOF! I am in love with these. I would love a couple of the poofs in my family room. In a white leather or even green!

I have a friend who is starting a great business of imports on line. Hopefully her next shipment is from Morocco and there might be some poofs involved. yippee!

I can't even keep count the number of chairs I have re-purposed. My garage currently has 8 chairs waiting for me to take over and find them new life. They are an easy way to begin the passion of re-designed old classics. A simple wood chair with a little upholstery should be everyone's first try at a Thrifty Redesign. NOW, I love these French Style Chairs and giving them a whole new era. "I like taking French furniture and making it irreverent-like choosing bright chartreuse for these vintage French chairs." (Fresh Home Magazine) LOVE IT!

The iron-glass top table. Perfection. I want it and know I will find it somewhere in my searches. Something that can be sanded and painted a fun vibrant color. timeless and can be used in many great spaces.

My favorite color is green. Not your grandmother's forest green but vibrant yet mellow lime green and grass green. I love the brave choice of furniture fabric with this rug. takes guts!

You see those hanging baskets. I have them! Can you guess which color? Yes, the green one on the bottom. I have 6 of them of different sizes in our family room to store the kids toys on our shelving. They are from World Market and priced just right.

Well, I love the idea of using them as office files and hanging from a coat rack. great idea. I might not do the coat rack hanging idea but definitely the files for my office space.

My PeePee Is going with Fishy

our first Fishy passed away this afternoon. I take him to the toilet to "flush" him to heaven. My boys watch on. As I push the flush, during our moment of silence, my 3 year old starts peeing into the potty. my 5 year old and I start yelling, "nnnooooo, don't pee on fishy!" Too late. 3 year old replies, my peepee is dead too and it went to God, it's okay mommy. it's okay."

BUT WAIT--Update to this blog. 2 weeks ago I was at an Antique Fair and found the exact style and pieces for the rest of the seat. the original 1970 pieces. Of course I could not buy it all but I did buy my little end table. Picture below.

Okay, so the image on the lake with the Adirondack chairs is my dream Backyard Seating. They would actually be key lime green chairs but whose being picky.

After many summers of living in my current home and spending most of my outdoor time gardening, pruning, planting etc., trying to get the landscape just right, I haven't had time for color shopping.

Anyhoo, I finally decided not to invest in more planting and use this summer's outdoor cash-stash to put some seating and color into the entertainment area of the yard. Finally.

We have a main seating area in the backyard with a black iron table and chairs that we bought as newlyweds. I wanted to dress it up a bit and at a local garage sale found the perfect bench for a couple bucks. WHY!!!???? oh why, did I not buy all 4 is beyond my comprehension. When I finally decided to run back and buy the others they were gone. :( tear.

Well, they needed a little Kekifying and elbow grease. Well worth it. It not only adds extra seating but color.

I KNOW!!! Why didn't I grab the other benches??? The original color was 30 year old faded wood. Example, your old fence stain color.

I added color with a not so tradition table umbrella I found online, on clearance. I basically paid more for shipping. darn, USPS.

Now, we also have a side deck that extends out from our kitchen. No joke, we never used it for anything. I didn't have the right chairs and I even had high hopes of enclosing it for a mudroom. But, I couldn't wait any longer.

I gladly inherited from my mom's classic iron-metal high back lounge chairs. With a little sanding, priming and paint they were ready to go. BUT they had no cushions for 2 summers. So they sat in storage.

Well, one day walking through my Target, I saw Smith Hawken Cushions and pillows. Total cost for 2 sets plus throw pillows $150. YES, $150 for something I might not sit on everyday, and will be stored for 10 months of the year. Chicago summers really only last 8 weeks, if we are lucky.

What to do?

Around this time I had become an Extreme Couponer. YES, with binder and all. Believe you me, it works. Well, I had these coupons to buy Bounty Paper Towels at Target, and Target would give me $5 gift cards. Of course, I purchased the paper towels with coupons plus the Redeem Your Gift Card Coupon together. You can ask my husband, we have had an endless supply of paper towels all summer :)

Yes, I know, $5 gift cards only got you so far. So, I also transferred a couple prescriptions for $10 and $25 dollar gift cards. jiji.

Cushions cost me $14 total. Well, of course I have a lot of paper towels and, now I am transferring prescriptions back to my local pharmacy, but well worth it. Photo below.

Now, you might be asking, "oh, what is that shelving unit?"

or you might be asking, "that looks familiar." If you are a Wilmette Resident.

One day when I was taking my son to camp, I noticed a home was throwing away a lot of wood. Doesn't happen to often around here.

I told myself, "if all that wood is still there after I drop him off, it was meant to be for me."

You can probably guess, OF COURSE it was still there 7 minutes later!

It was meant for me. I quickly searched through piles of GOOD wood and found this buried. It was not painted, solid wood, hand built shelving in good condition. There was a backing that I pulled off to have a little exposed brick look. I primed it white and painted it the same color used on the backyard bench. Then, I distressed it, to bring some of the white to the surface and original wood stain to give it more of a cottage feel.

Roadside Pickup

I drove past these 2 armed wood chairs 4 times today. Each time regretting that I didn't stop to at least "check them out." My husband has been away for a few days so that he can compete in his first Full Ironman. Why would someone want to swim over 2 miles, ride over100 on bike, and then run 26.2 miles is beyond me but it was his goal and he accomplished it. Anyhoo, he was away on this Sunday night and at the last minute I decided to take my boys out for dinner. Driving past these 2 chairs once again. After a very relaxing evening at a restuarant with my 5 and 3 year old (sarcasm) we headed home and ONCE AGAIN saw these 2 chairs. I decided to check them out. FANTABULATION!!!!! loved them. They need a little TLC and then keki style to make them pop. I am on my way to pinterest.com to brainstorm some fun ideas. I am 100% sure they will not stay in their original Stain. I am thinking something funky and colorful. Both seats need to be re-done and I am definitely thinking playful. These chairs are old and they are going to be reborn again. Pics to come soon. But feel free to let me know your thoughts on color for chair. I have attached 2 pics of ideas I am leaning towards with fabric.

10 Uses For Beer

So the summer is ending and your Garage Refrigerator is Stacked with those ice-cold summer beers. Bring out the Opus One baby, Fall is here. Anyhoo, what to do with all those beers besides have a couple on Monday Night Football gatherings. Well, read below. Great Article Find in Rachel Ray on what to do with those beers!!

1. Banish Brown spots on the lawn: That's right, pour less than half a cup on the problem areas and abra-ka-dabra. The fermented sugars kill any fungus and feed the grass, allowing it to come back green . (Jess Lebow-author of The Beer Devotional.

2. Cast-iron Clean-up Time: Pour a little beer into the still warm pan. It will keep the mess from sticking and even season the pan. Ooh, la la.

3. Fluffier pancakes and waffles: If you like fluffy pancakes-sub your beef for any liquid called for in the recipe. They will be light and airy. Also, try using beer for making matzo ball and bread!! yummo!!

4. Loosen Rusty Bolts and Screws-WHO KNEW!!: Pour a few gulps of beer on the frozen hardware, wait a few seconds, then give it a turn. Carbonation helps break down the rust.

5. Cook Juicy Chicken: Prop a whole chicken over a half-full can of beer (the can goes into the cavity). Season with salt, pepper, spices. Beer evaporates into chicken as it cooks, creating a super moist chicken. delis!!

6. Prevent Garden Pest: and by pest I mean bugs not your kids. Fill small jars with beer and place them in the garden. Insects attract to the sugars-they slip in for a sip and never come out--ha! Keep those wasps and bees away at parties. you can also place a bowl several feet away from the main area and bugs will buzz away from guests.

7. Make Jewelry Sparkle: Use a light ale and a clean towel you can polish gold jewelry to remove dirt. You can also try this on tarnished copper pots.

8. Give Your Hair Shine: Put life back into your flat hair, yes you, by mixing 1 cup lager with 1 egg yolk and massage into strands. Leave in for a few minutes and wash with shampoo (provided by Julia March)

9. Get a Better Nights Sleep: Wash your pillowcases in water spiked with a little beer. What?!? you say. The chemical compound dimethylvinyl carbinol, has a calming and slightly sedative effect which is an herbal remedy for insomnia. WHO KNEW! :)

10. Soothe Your Soles: the beer enzymes soften callused feet. Mix room temperature beer and warm peppermint tea (half and half). Dunk those toes for 20 minutes. who needs spa!

Little Girls MoodBoard

I have 2 new little clients. Well, their parents new home is my current project but it does include the little girls room. These are the cutest little girls who recently moved into their home, that, most likely, is their home for the next 7-30 years. I really wanted to give each girl their own "look" that they can grow into for the next couple years. Check out their boards so far.

Girl Room #1

This is the color palette for 1 little girl. Grey with pink. Love the poof, and pink throw pillows that are easily interchangeable if she decides pink is not a color she no longer loves. Yet, the wall color and larger pieces have a more modern, yet, neutral tone.

My favorite piece, the silver round mirror. LOVE IT!

Girl Room #2

The oldest (adorable social 5 year old) told me her favorite color was blue. So I picked a more sky blue with hints of green and a touch of pink to connect the 2 rooms that are 3 feet away from each other.

Now to plan the rest of the house.

Restoring Real Wood

Another great find. This past weekend I was on the hunt. Not sure what I was on the hunt for but I knew I would know when I found it. After many Estate Sales and 2 garage sales, there it was. It was love at first sight. Amazingly, I noticed people walking right past it. Like the last puppy left in the litter. Looks a little unloved, uncared for, unkekified (FYI I will make up my own words-consider yourself forewarned). Luckily, for me, people didn't realize, that even from across the yard, I knew I had a Solid Wood coffee table. I calmly walked over, not to raise any suspension and gently bent down to lift it (without anyone noticing my movement). SCORE!!! YES!!! At least 150 pounds, Heavy, solid, golden.

Ok, so once again looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was watching-pink panther movements. I lifted the table, bent down to find any form of identification. Store, builder, name, anything. And there it was, like the light to the gateway of Heaven, the original price tag, barely holding on.

I looked at the top of the table. At least 5 wet water rings (somebody didn't use a coaster), you know, back in the day, coasters at Grandma's house was without question. Kids today probably don't even know what a coaster is for. come on people, lets bring it back, in style.

well, anyway, more damage. It was completely obvious which side of the table faced the couch, because the entire edge was scraped off from footwear rubbing against it. It must have been in a family room of sorts.

Well, I calmly, without seeming to eager, asked the lady of the house, "how much for the coffee table."

she replies, "um, I don't know, just want to get rid of it, you could probably paint it, a good painting projects."(FYI-For Sale By Owner sign on front lawn) she finally says, "how about........... $15"

HOLY S--T!!!

I reply, "ummmm, hmmmm, ummmmm, hmmmmm, well, okay, let me look around, can you put a hold sticker on it?"

I look around and found the BEST things for accessories in my Staging business. knick knacks, glasses and more.

I regress...

I return calmly, with A LOT in tow, and ask "how about $20 for everything."

She replies, "sure. don't you go to to St...., I see you and your family every Sunday at Mass."

oh my, Catholic Guilt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ask, "are you okay with $20 for it all."

She replies, "of course, I know you are local."

sigh.

Well, the before was gruesome that I even saw the terror in my moms face when she saw it. The picture doesn't do it justice. Water Rings everywhere and on 2 sides it looked like a 15-month old had been teething on it. If you look at the picture closely those light spots around where actually dents and sever stains and marks.

Well, I relied on my most favorite product for restoring wood. Restore a Finish. Sadly, I had it in Cherry and I needed it in Walnut. So I had to run to our great local Ace Hardware and spend the $4.99 on a small can of walnut.

With a little time and patience, check it out.,....I have added a little Keki to it.

Church Rummage Sale

What great finds. I am always amazed how these rummage sales go. It sometimes can be a hit or miss but every year I have attended the Kenilworth Rummage Sale and it has always been a hit.

There are lines at multiple entrances to get in and then when the doors open there is a frenzy and people worry that you will get in front of them. This concept has always made me laugh; because, what is one person's "find" might mean nothing to the next person. For instance, I was in shock to find some of the things I picked out still sitting at tables.
"What?? this is still here, no one has grabbed yet??"
Yet, the women standing elbow to me finds a treasure of her own and questions, "I can't believe no one has taken this yet?" I look at it as something I would never pick up.
So people, when at rummage or estate sales, smile, say hello, let them through the narrow hallway if they are trying to get by and if you find something you love but has a "sold" sticker, then it just wasn't mean to be, because, you never know what might be sitting behind it- that you will love. I always attend these with patience and a smile on my face, talking to others, and those that work there. enjoy the ride.

So here are today's finds. I got a lot more that will be used for Staging only, but here are some items that meant something to me.

I needed some hardcover books. I look for first editions, good condition, and hate to say it, color scheme. If I need some blues or reds etc. Today I found 3 First Edition Hemingway books-you can only imagine the publishing date(blue hardcover bottom shelf). These are for my shelf and shelf alone. Above the 3 Hemingway books I got first edition Art Books from the Art Institute of Chicago and Guggenheim.Cost $2/book

This was my baby. I drove home with it on my lap. It is the First Edition Rockwell collection. Not only perfect for my Art Book Stack on the coffee table, but to my surprise there were treasures inside. Original news paper clippings of Rockwell and Art Exhibition pamphlets dating back decades. Cost $12

The inside also had some original hidden treasure of Rockwell postcards and articles written by his son in the 70's. Sweet.

Fun piece. 100% wool entry rug. Reminds me of Pier 1 Imports, I believe. It has my entryway color scheme but more importantly I know where I can get it cleaned for pennies. Cost: $5

Picture a little blurry. sorry. Will update. But, for starters every frame on this Picture Wall (going up our stairs) didn't cost me more than $1-2 at estate sales. All wood frames etc. I keep in the black frames family pictures of ancestors and then black and whites of our immediate family. I differentiate the black picture frame theme with hints of gold framed mirrors. Today I found 2 that are up on the wall and 3 more that I am still playing around with. Now, these gold frames (and I am picky) are all solid wood, original mirror, with date of framing on back. The larger one dates back almost 89 years. Cost: $3/frame

Re-styling Dining Room Chair

Today's project was re-styling my office chair. I had a cute upholstered office chair, but, a month ago I had a Staging project where it would fit in perfectly, so off it went. I was left Chair-less. I have been using a dining room chair, but could not feel inspired sitting in a dull chair from my dining room. UNTIL, I found this over 40 year old wood armed Dining chair, solo and with no friends.

Cost of chair $0

Step 1: Working space. I love working outdoors, fresh air is good for any sanding/painting projects. Chicago winters are not fun for us Project goers.

Get all your necessary tools. I knew I needed to remove the cushion first, most chairs can be re-upholstered at home with the right tools- a Screwdriver. Then, to take care of the wood, sandpaper, sandpaper, sandpaper and a good primer. I already had all of the supplies from other projects. Total Cost $0

Step 2: Once the cushion is removed it is very important to sand down the paint. Not only will the new paint not stick after time, but dirt and dust are not our friends in re-painting projects.

Step 3: Choose your fabric. Joann Fabrics was running a great special, 60% off all regular priced fabrics. So I ran to the store and grabbed me-self a yard. I wanted a little blue and green that already existed in my "office space," and living room. Total Cost $14.

Step 4: Pick the paint color or finish you want for your chair. I new I didn't want to spend days sanding down to the wood (because the chair had 2 different layers of paint on it) and I knew I didn't want a wood finish. With the fabric in hand I pick a hidden color from the design. A background color. NOW, I didn't want to buy a quart of paint, knowing I needed much less than a quart. So I looked through all my paint collections, and found paints that would work for this project. Then I began mixing colors around. After mixing a sky blue with a darker gray I created the perfect match!!

Step 5: Prime and let dry

Step 6: Begin painting the first layer of paint. Invest in a good brush. When I am not using the brush (while first coat dries) I wrap it in plastic wrap. This keeps it nice and moist. It will actually last days like this if your project goes on hold.

Step 7: While it dries- work on your cushion. I prefer re-upholstering on a hard wood floor area. I can press down on the cushion while pulling and tugging fabric around the corners. It needs to be tight. I quickly staple gun down, working my way from one side to the next, paying extra close attention to the corner, so the folds match. Layout your fabric beforehand to make sure you have the pattern how you want it and centered.

Also, buy extra foam or cushion material. The 40+ year old chair needed some extra padding. Here is the Before and After of the Cushion

The Sunroom: Love White color scheme with pops of green and heavy blue. They have a fully sun-exposed room, as a result, white slipcover furniture would work best for fading purposes but you can always add color with simply items that can be spray painted every couple summers to make them pop after fading. Want this room for me.

The living Room was only missing a few accent pieces: I love the ikat for them. They chose to go with the red which will look fab.

The Dining Room: They recently purchased a great dining table and chairs-all wood with straight lines. They also have heavy wood beams in the ceiling (straight lines) with a beautiful dark round iron chandelier. I wanted an iron style open buffet to tie in the chandelier and add a new texture that wasn't wood. With a round mirror to contrast all the straight lines. Love!

Antique Craigslist Desk --- Too Many Options

So many great projects coming up, I am can't sleep, cause the mind is rolling with ideas. This week I am on the hunt, and have found, Antique Desks to re-purpose. I love the look and size of these desks (besides the fact the are solid wood). Now, I am planning on doing one as my new office desk, but I am also planning on doing one for a clients-little girls room. yup, you get signature pieces if you design with Keki!!

Now, This piece is in great condition and I love drawers. I LOVE DRAWERS!! I am a collector of everything office related (www.seejanework.com).

But, the finish isn't me. I plan to sand it down, prime and then paint it a de-stressed white. Love the idea of original hardware, but I plan to remove them and replace them with the following.

Now, I am re-designing a little girls room. This little girl is growing up and needs a new desk. I am hoping to re-purpose this one as my gift to the client. It will be sanded, primed and painted the best color EVER (see below) it will be glazed to give it a vintage feel.

Speaking of The Novogratz. Love love love this room. It's bright, it's airy, it's functional. And if you follow my blog, you know I love a pop of color. I have also noticed that the Novogratz are putting the word "family" in many of their latest home designs, it could be in the area rug or on wall lights. A great signature idea!

My husband is a witness to the fact that everything I have, from notebooks, to pencils, to paper, to lamp shades and pillows have to appeal to me. And if I had an ipad cover, I would shop for it here at www.sakroots.com. However, I do have an iphone and laptop that might need a new cover. Loved their many designs. I have definitely bookmarked this site for later shopping.

Fab Find #2

Now you may have come to realize I am hooked on Estate and Flea market shopping. I can't even begin to tell you what I found last week at a local Church rummage sale. I checked out matching items of it on ebay England and was happy to find out it was worth 150 times more than my investment. However, I am on the hunt for these two Pyrex designs. Want them, love them, can't find them, but I will. I love the polka dot's (because polka dots are timeless) and I want it to go with matching salmon stripes.

You maybe thinking, Pyrex?? these are not your plastic hazardous dishes! "...the first glass cookware label to withstand extreme temperature shifts-appeared in 1915, that could take a meatloaf straight from freezer to a 350-degree oven" (Country Living, May 2011) Patterns branched out in 1954 and through the 60's and 70's their design motif's were in sync with the times. It's my new hunt and it should be yours too. Safe for the family and CUTE!!!

Though I love this side table and probably would have picked it up myself at a flea market, come home, sand, prime and paint it, that is not what caught my eye. The paint choice did it. I have been using this color on so many pieces in the last few months. Pieces I hope to sell. It is great to see that it is a shade that looks hip, chic, and timeless.

I crave big corner pieces. One thing that sold me on my current home was the original built in corner piece. However, I love that it was painted a color other than white and filled with white vases and pitchers. My built-in is painted white and to contrast with the white pieces on display I painted the inside the shade of our wall. However, I love this color.

A friend of mine recently purchased a beautiful piece from a local store. Chalet Nursery. It was a show stopper. I loved loved loved it. Even the color is close in tone. She fills her hutch with clear pieces. perfect. GREAT FIND MK!!
